US, S. Korea Conclude Freedom Shield Drills
The joint drills, which lasted 11 days, focused on simulating wartime situations and strengthening combined military readiness “across all domains,” as noted in a joint statement.
Approximately 18,000 personnel took part in the exercise. However, the number of field training operations was reduced to about 22, compared to 51 conducted the previous year.
Officials indicated that future drills would be distributed throughout the year as part of efforts to support potential diplomatic engagement.
The exercise also included evaluations related to the possible transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON) from the United States to South Korea, a long-standing objective for Seoul.
North Korea condemned the drills, describing them as “rehearsals for invasion,” and carried out several ballistic missile tests during the same period.
