S. Korea extends condolences over death of N. Korea’s ex-figurehead
(MENAFN) South Korea has offered its condolences following the death of Kim Yong Nam, North Korea’s former titular head of state.
Unification Minister Chung Dong-young expressed sympathy in an official statement, noting Kim’s role in fostering cross-border dialogue. "I express my condolences upon learning of the passing of former President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly Kim Yong-nam," Chung said.
He also recalled past encounters with Kim during visits to Pyongyang in 2005 and 2018, describing them as “meaningful discussions on peace on the Korean Peninsula and the advancement of inter-Korean relations.”
According to reports, Kim, who had been receiving treatment for cancer since June, passed away Monday due to multiple organ failure.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited the bier of the late statesman on Tuesday, accompanied by senior officials from the Workers’ Party of Korea and the government, state media said.
China also offered condolences, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning calling Kim “an old friend of the Chinese people.” She commended his visits to China and his “important contributions” toward strengthening the traditional friendship and cooperation between the two nations, according to reports.
